They Called Him Yeshua
The History of the Messianic Jewish Awakening
The History
The 1960s and 70s were a period of national and global change. From assassinations of world changing leaders to wars in Vietnam and the Middle East to the “British Invasion”, these decades were a time of social upheaval and progress. American youth were searching for meaning and a new identity. What began with widespread hedonism, vice and voice evolved into an unprecedented spiritual and cultural change known as “The Jesus Movement”. A new generation came to faith and expressed that faith in new ways.
One study suggests that approximately 40% of those young people who put their hopes and trust in Jesus were from a cultural or ethnically Jewish background. To them, the question arose, “What do we as Jews do with our faith in this Jewish Messiah? How does it mesh with with our biblical and cultural upbringing? How do these play out in our daily lives?”
Thus began a move away from the terms of Hebrew Christianity and an absorption into greater Christianity and its churches and into a new culture of Messianic Judaism. This was the birth of groups like the YMJA (Young Messianic Jewish Alliance), Jews for Jesus, and independent Messianic Jewish synagogues and ministries. Music groups like Lamb, The Liberated Wailing Wall, and Israel’s Hope were the voice of a cultural and spiritual revolution.
The Project
“They Called Him Yeshua seeks to tell the story of this spiritual and cultural awakening in the voices of the pioneers who brought about such change. Through interviews, you will hear first-hand accounts from leaders like Jenny and Marty Goetz, Rabbi Paul Liberman, Paul Wilbur, Jonathan Bernis, Stuart Dauermann, Melissa Moskowitz, and many others of their personal testimonies and conviction to be part of a revolution.
These video interviews will be released first as a video podcast series, then a book by the same name. The podcasts will be the interviews of the pioneers themselves and will archive nuanced stories of a flashpoint in history. The culminating book will then weave these stories together to tell the holistic story of the birth of a movement and a worldwide culture.
